Press Release Body = Artist Dean Jordan promotes his wood turning as an art form and
a craft that entails precision and creativity. As an artist, he tries to use the
most natural wood from the Northwest but sometimes includes highly exotic or figured
wood in his wood turning creations.

Woodturning, shaping wood as it rotates on a machine called lathe, is believed to
have originated three years ago. Early turners specialized in everyday objects such
as bowls, plates, and beads, but turned pieces also were used as furniture and
building ornamentation. Since the mid 20th century, interest has grown in
woodturning as a hobby and fine craft. Wood turners still make functional objects
but interest has grown in using the natural characteristics of the wood to shape
creative designs that result in objects that are often more sculptural than
utilitarian.

"Wood, like glass or plastic can be used to make exquisite art," artist Dean Jordan
said. "Everyone has beginning to accept that wood art exists, like glass art. We
aren't here just to make cups and bowls and plates, we are here to display are
creativity and our passion for wood turning."

One example of artistic wood turning is hollow turning which is the process of
creating a form, usually a vase or bottle by removing the interior of the wood piece
through a small opening. A variety of specialty and precision tools help the artist
to complete the wood turning design. This form of woodturning is one of the most
challenging since the artist cannot see where the tool is cutting inside the wood.

"Woodturning can be an excruciating task but I love to do it, I consider it art work
and I consider it my passion." Dean Jordan said. "Now I've made my creations public
by posing them on my website where I have a little gallery."
